Every year, more than 100 people and a pack of around 60-70 dogs of this breed take part in the National Basset Hound Meeting. The canine crowd is made up not only of dogs representing the various breeds with “basset” in their name, but also other four-legged friends and family members.
Participants range from experienced breeders affiliated with the Polish Kennel Club and single-dog owners who take part in show life, to trainers, veterinarians, and those who simply have a typical “couch potato” at home.
What matters is the principle that pedigrees stay at home, and that love for the breed comes first.
The meeting is also a perfect opportunity to learn about the breed and its owners, serving as a chance to exchange experiences, for example before buying your first basset hound.
The organisers of the meeting care about spreading knowledge about basset hounds, about conscious and professional breeding, and about the healthy, proper development of these rather unusual dogs, so that they can live long, healthy lives. As they say, it is, after all, a big dog on short legs.
The meeting has developed something of a tradition of its own – such as commemorative mugs with the logo for every family, many of which now hold a place of honour and form a beautiful collection. There are also car stickers and, of course, gifts for the most important guests of the event – the basset hounds themselves.
